Nishi is a NYC-based Indian American Singer/Songwriter & Actress. Born in New Delhi and hailing from the south Indian state of Kerala, India. Nishi & her family moved to New York when she was 5 years old where she has lived ever since. Nishi has sung & performed her whole life, writing her first songs & poems at age 9. She is drawn to music & dance with a passion she can only describe as part of her very being. She studies Argentine Tango, Salsa, Flamenco, has studied Lebanese Bellydance in the past and incorporates Bollywood-style Indian dance in her own songs. At 22, deeply passionate about human rights, Nishi put aside her musical aspirations for the pursuit of law & is now a lawyer in NYC practicing personal injury & insurance defense litigation full-time. She volunteers pro bono as a human rights lawyer & in November 2008, launched her own human rights non-profit, the Leading Light Foundation, a legal & scholarly news & policy organization that reports on instances of human rights law violations; she works as time permits. Nishi realized early on working full-time as a personal injury lawyer didn't fulfill her. Inside, music called. From 2003-2005, she met & worked with independent music producers & in 2005/2006 released a self-titled professional demo EP of 6 original songs ranging from Indian dance to rock & pop. Nishi & her music were featured on U.S., U.K. & Canadian radio & newspapers & magazines in U.S., Britain, Canada, India & Japan. Since 2006, Nishi has performed in full band & acoustic shows throughout NYC, worked with various producers & is now with Flytrap Music producing new dance tracks for her new album Master of My Fate scheduled for release November 2011.
As a professional actress, Nishi began acting in 2006 in music videos & in 2007 with background work in film. In between producing music & performing, Nishi began to study acting, seriously pursued it in 2009 and fell in love with it. She auditioned & won lead roles in plays, musical theater & film & began starring in NYC musical theater in 2009. Since then, she has played both lead & supporting roles in dramatic & comedy theater (plays & musicals), will be in 3 new productions this Fall 2011 in starring & supporting roles, has starred in staged readings & starred in feature & short films & performed featured background work on television. One of Nishi's feature films she completed in 2010, Sid's Paralysis, by the Pakistani award-winning director Babar Ahmed, will be released in late-2011. In 2012, Nishi will produce her own 1st musical to open on the NYC stage & is currently casting for it; she will be writing & producing all lyrics & music.
